WHAT BIG TEETH YOU HAVE GRANDMA!

WELCOME TO THE CROCODILE CHRONICLES AUSTRALIA

I am angry

Yes, I admit I am angry. And why am I angry? The reason is there are many people who have decided to put saltwater crocodiles before humans and people are being hurt.

People are being killed by saltwater crocodiles. You can look at what is wrong in two different ways:

First, simply that the places that I enjoyed so much in the sixties, those places where I swam, fished, and hunted are no longer safe. In fact, due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles these places are now extremely dangerous to the point where the slightest misadventure could be fatal.

Second, and a hell of a lot more serious is that a considerable number of people believe that the life of a saltwater crocodile is worth more than the life of a young girl, or a teenage boy, or some hapless tourist. For their own, and very different reasons, these people believe that human beings have less value than a giant killing machine, for that is what a large saltwater crocodile really is.

That is not right!

BACK IN 1962

SALTWATER CROCODILES? This is what the swamp looked like back on my hunting adventure. Of course, there were no swamp boats and we were deep in that water, almost up to our armpits in that green water. Some say that it is more exciting today, but I will pass, thanks.

1962. When I was a boy growing up in Darwin, N.T. there was no real danger from freshwater crocodiles and almost no saltwater crocodiles. We camped where we wanted to camp, we walked in swamps and we slept on the beaches. We did so without fear. With the exception of a few places, we went into the water as and when we pleased, without any concern for our safety. It was a wonderful life.

My real experiences began when I met Harold Harmer, who was born and bred in Darwin. Harold’s family had the first taxi in Darwin. My first sighting of Harold and his brother Norman was at Buffalo Creek. I saw them swimming in the creek at the same time my eyes took in the dead 3 metre saltwater crocodile on the bank. I thought, “Crazy bastards!” Little did I know that Harold would become one of my best friends.  We had some great times and by today’s standards we were a bit extreme, I guess. But that’s the way it was.

With Harold’s encouragement I hunted barefoot in ancient swamps and dark steamy jungles. I remember that in 1963 we hunted in Black Jungle Swamp where the thick green water was so deep that it reached my chest. It was ominous. Snakes slithered through the canopy and huge spiders dropped from above. When wading through the deep water we had to place our bare feet carefully in the thick mud because there were spiky leaves ,fallen from pandanus trees, but there was no thought of monsters.

No, the idea that a huge saltwater crocodile would suddenly lunge from nowhere and kill us did not even enter our heads.

CURRENT SITUATION:

Sad to say, the situation has drastically changed in the Northern Territory. I can tell you without fear of contradiction that it has vastly altered in this specific location. Check the list of Attacks. Go back to the year 2009 to find something very sad. I think that is much more than sad that an 11-year-old girl was killed by a saltwater crocodile in that very same jungle. Children are not safe.

CROCODILE ATTACKS

People are being attacked by both freshwater crocodiles and saltwater crocodiles. People are being killed by the saltwater crocodiles. This is not a “once every now and then” thing. It is a regular occurrence.

Why is it happening? Who decides that men, women, and children can be killed and eaten?

This investigation was an incredible experience for me. I have an enormous interest in saltwater crocodiles and great memories of the place where I grew up, Darwin N.T. But I really had not seen the obvious. What is happening now is more than most can understand.
There are way too many crocodile attacks, people terrified, children killed and eaten.
And why?
It is hard to understand that the quality of life and living must be so seriously degraded so that more and more saltwater crocodiles can thrive. While I appreciate crocodiles and even more so admire them, I cannot agree to put them before humans the way it is now.
Yes, I am saying that places where I grew up as a teenager are now off-limits, or "go and take your chances" with a monster lurking in the deep. Innocent men, women, and children are being attacked, mutilated, and even devoured for what real purpose?
The famous shark movie "Jaws" instilled fear when it came to swimming in the ocean. But crocodiles come out of the water and attack people sleeping peacefully in their tents.

Are there really a lot of crocodile attacks? Read about it here!

THE THEN AND NOW SIDE OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY

THEN

AND NOW

“Crab Claw Island Resort” at Bynoe Harbour N.T.

This is a beautiful place. You can see that at a glance. But once, 60 years ago, this area teemed with large and deadly saltwater crocodiles.

According to Mr. Christie alligators  (or crocodiles) have been exceptionally numerous in the neighbourhood of the Point Charles Lighthouse this year, several having been killed by the blacks.

However, in the sixties, when I was a boy, I was perfectly safe right there and anywhere else in the territory. I had no reason to worry about saltwater crocodiles.

The saltwater crocodiles are breeding up. The average saltwater crocodile is getting bigger and bigger. I mean we are talking about crocodiles getting bigger to the extent of 3.0 m bigger!

There are now over 100,000-150,000 more crocodiles in the Northern Territory than there were when I was a boy.

As it goes, I was safe swimming in any water that I chose to swim in.

What is the future?

DONT WATCH THIS IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH HORROR.

It started with Sweetheart

In the period 1970-74 a number of boats were attacked by a saltwater crocodile, one that earned the name Sweetheart. No lives were lost but, the records show that my older brother, Kel, was in one of those boats. That was the beginning of a war.

It could have ended with the death of Sweetheart, but in truth this was just the beginning. There are hundreds of attacks and incidents in the history books.

CROCODILE ATTACKS

List of crocodile attacks

In compiling my own database, I am indebted to CrocBite http://www.crocodile-attack.info/ and many other sources. This is a work-in-progress. Apologies for any errors or omissions but this site will grow and improve. My aim is to provide more information in a less formal, or less scientific form.

I will, at the risk of upsetting someone somewhere, and we all know how easy it is to do that, offer an opinion.

I lived in Darwin at a time when one could sleep on the beach without fear, when all waters were safe when compared to the current situation. When I was a boy I did not pick up the newspaper and read every few months that someone else had been attacked or killed.

I will try and remain objective and professional but I will focus on what I see as the reality of the situation.

the power of the bite

Human beings can close the jaw with something like 200 pounds per sq inch. Enough to bite off a finger?

Alligators are a step up from that.

But the big saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus), what we know in Australia as a “saltie”,   is the star.

According to Gregory Erickson, his jaws can crush at 3,700 pounds per square inch (psi), or 16,460 newtons, of bite force.

One bite to take off your head…………. or one bite to cut you into two pieces.

If he grabs you and he does not want to open that mouth, it will take three guys with crowbars to open the jaws.

Make no mistake. This is a serious beast.

He is there, everywhere……………waiting.

Read my novel, "The Sixth Season, Gudjewg" as it is about the power of the bite.

"The Sixth Season, Gudjewg"

“The Sixth Season, Gudjewg” is the name of my novel about one man and one saltwater crocodile.

It is also a story of the Northern Territory, Arnhem Land, aborigines, crocodiles, and other animals. The story is set amid the beauty and the cruelty of what was the Last Frontier.

Hope you will and enjoy the story, Leighton Clark.

Read More about the novel.

Read a book about men and crocodiles. Read about the six seasons and see the difference. Come to know particularly Gudjewg, the season of re-birth and renewal.

The time when the crocodiles hatch their eggs.

“Gudjewg” is the monsoon season, a time when heat and and rain, and humidity create an explosion in plant and animal life. This is the time when crocodiles hatch their eggs.

A time when men go mad……….

The Sixth Season, Gudjewg

The Sixth Season, Gudjewg is a story about a war between one man and one saltwater crocodile. The whiteman knows the “Wet” and the “Dry”, but the aboriginal people of Arnhem Land know six seasons. Gudjewg is the wet part of the wet season. It is hot, steamy, humid, with endless rain and major flooding. Activity almost stops but Gudjewg is the time when the crocodiles hatch their eggs. Gudjewg is also a time of re-birth and renewal.
Joe begins a battle with a killer crocodile that consumes his life. This is a story about the six seasons but it is as well a terrible tale of revenge and horror. No-one can foresee the tragic outcome.

A novel to enjoy

“wHY I LOVE CROCODILES.”

I do love saltwater crocodiles. I find them fascinating. They are the living relics of an age more than 200 million years ago.
They are special, unique creatures and we must treasure them.
On the other hand, we should not allow them to kill us.

And if we don't watch out, they will kill us, because they see humans as just another food source for an apex predator.
